Five former Dutch street dwellers are soon to become official tour guides, showing visitors around their former haunts in the central city of Utrecht, organisers said on Wednesday.
Having completed formal training through the tourism bureau, the group will take up their duties from September 13, said Simone Lensink, a spokeswoman for the welfare organisation Altrecht, which is behind the project.

A gas leak has forced the evacuation of hundreds of businesses, including the Gold Coast Marriott Courtyard Hotel, in the centre of Surfers Paradise.
Thousands of holiday-makers, residents and workers have been ordered to leave Cavill Avenue, as a two-kilometre exclusion zone has been established around the retail strip.
It is understood police detected the gas leak about 9.15am and blocked off the mall from Hanlan Street, Elkhorn Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard.

Marina Bay Sands, through its retail arm Sands Retail Asia, has announced that Singapore-based retail group, F J Benjamin, will expand its portfolio with three new outlets in Marina Bay Sands Shoppes. The retail giant has confirmed that it will bring US brand GUESS, international lingerie firm La Senza, and the company’s own fast-growing fashion label, RAOUL, to the new mall when it opens early next year.

Qantas has celebrated a 50-year jet age anniversary with cup cakes at Sydney airport and a reminder that international air fares once cost over two years’ salary.
Passengers were served 1950s-style iced cakes before boarding QF73 to San Francisco, half a century to the day after Qantas operated the world’s first jet passenger service across the Pacific, via Nadi and Honolulu.

Jetstar believes new technology will help its customers avoid hidden commissions, writes Clive Dorman.
Jetstar has fired another shot in the battle for consumers’ hearts and minds, but it’s not Tiger Airways or Virgin Blue in its sights.
The airline is targeting online travel retailers who add commissions to fares without telling customers.

AUSTRALIAN airlines are pushing to reduce the number of cabin crew on passenger planes.
But the flight attendants’ union says cutting the ratio of one cabin crew member for every 36 passengers to one for 50 passengers would put lives at risk in an emergency.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has set up a project team to review the proposal, which was last reviewed and rejected by Federal Parliament six years ago.

Boeing Tuesday delayed the first flight and delivery of its 787 Dreamliner to reinforce the structure of the aircraft, the latest setback in a program seen as a key to the aerospace giant’s future.
Boeing said a new schedule for the first flight and delivery would be available in “several weeks” and that in the interim the 787 team will continue with other aspects of testing.
