Though fierce in competition, mainland travel agencies pin high hopes on tourism market in Taiwan, after the travel ban was lifted a year ago.
    This was because mainland-to-Taiwan tour has been soaring, against the downward trend of visits to and from the United States and European countries as a result of the spread of A/H1N1 flu and economic meltdown.

The Taiwan News reported that the five attractions, which will be named in May, will each be given TW$300 million (US$8.9 million) over two years to upgrade facilities and attract investment.
The move is part of Taiwan ’s TW$550 billion tourism-stimulation plan, which aims to create 400,000 jobs, attract private investment worth NT$200 billion and bring in world famous hotel chains.

WHERE TO STAY
I recently spent several days at the San Want Hotel Taipei (No. 172, Sec. 4, ZhongXiao East Road; 886-2-2772-2121; www.sanwant.com/en/index.aspx ). I found it delightful. It is mere steps from an MRT transit station. The local street food was outstanding. The Grand Hotel is grand, but isolated. If you are not into taxis or long walks, it is not an option.

Special Report: Spring Festival Special 2009
About 13,400 Chinese mainland tourists flocked to Taiwan last week, spending 850 million New Taiwan dollars (25.5 million U.S. dollars) in their first Spring Festival holiday on the island.
    Each visitor spent a daily average of about 9,000 NTD from Jan.26, the first day of the Spring Festival or lunar New Year, to Feb. 1, said Chang Shi-Chung, of the Taiwan tourism authority, Monday.
